Senior Spotlight: Damien Mowatt

MacArthur Senior Damien Mowatt plays Center and Nose Guard on the Highlander football team.

He used to play basketball and might wrestle this year. Before it was closed, he was also in Native American Club.

Mowatt has two sports accomplishments he’s proud of.

“My junior year, when I started my first varsity game, and then probably a couple weeks ago, when I got voted for the best lineman in the area,” he said.

Mowatt said it felt good to receive the honor and is keeping his grades up, but will miss his football family.

“Probably my teammates. I call them brothers. Been with them since seventh grade and it's gonna suck,” he said. “Everyone's going different paths so I'm gonna miss them mostly. Probably my coaches. They taught me a lot, like through technique, feet work, making sure to keep my body right, stuff like that.”

Mowatt will be going to college after he graduates to study sports medicine, but is unsure about where.

“So if I don't play college football I'll still be in the sports field helping other players and stuff like that,” he said.

Mowatt learned sports medicine from his dad.

“Just like learning about the body and how it works, the…muscles and all the parts in it,” he said.

Mowatt sings at powwows and helps his mom with crafts.

“I go to powwows, I sing,” he said. “This Comanche Fair I'm gonna dance, go dance for the first time. So yeah and then really just keep keeping my body healthy.”

Mowatt said he found a love for singing within the last few years.

“When I was growing up, I didn't really go to many powwows and stuff like that,” he said. “Like, probably a few years back is when I really started and then when I got to the drum for the first time, I just like I just love singing, and then it just made me feel good.”

Mowatt said his biggest supporters are his mom and dad, who really helped him keep his grades up and keep him in check with his actions and food choices.
