Lawton High Wolverine Receives Pre-Season Accolade

Lawton High School Wolverine Baseball shortstop Corbyn Swift was ranked number 87 in Oklahoma’s pre-season top 100.

“Coming off a not a very good season, but doing my part as myself just felt great,” he said. “And being like seen for doing what I needed to do just felt amazing.”

It took a lot of effort before junior year to get to where Swift is now.

“I've been working hard often on the field. We've been taking a lot of rounds, hitting. I've been working a lot more in the field; last year was outfield,” he said. “I moved up to fill a spot that we missed last year, so I'm just working harder and harder just so I can get my feeling down so I can help this team.”

There were several accomplishments along the way.

“My freshman year, I was batting a .300 with a .978 fielding percentage. Fast forward to my sophomore year, last year, I hit two home runs,” Swift said. “One against the number three-ranked team, Duncan, who went on to be 5A state champions, and I think that's probably about it, really. Oh, I broke a record here at Lawton High for 42 stolen bases in a season.”

He began his baseball career in the 6th grade.

“I joined because my friend Kegan, who plays on the team with me right now, asked if I wanted to come out and play, and…I grew up with him,” Swift said. “I went through all of elementary school with him, so I was like, ‘Yeah, I'll come out.’ And ever since then, I just love the game. I never wanted to stop.”

He said being with friends gives another feeling to the game.

“I have a whole lot of friends I grew up with. I'll probably…say about five that I went to elementary school with that I play with now,” Swift said. “About half the team I went to middle school with as well, so it's just I grew up with all them. They're all family to me, so I just have fun playing around with them.”

Swift is aiming to get a higher rank next year and looks forward to a positive record this season.
