Students Prepare for School Year

On Saturday, August 9, Comanche Nation Youth Services held its annual back-to-school bash at Watchetaker Hall.

About 900 backpacks with essential supplies were handed out, and families were also able to get meals from Food Distribution.

Student Services Director Dena Landers said it’s important to assist the families and make it easier for their households.

“It feels great giving back to them, especially seeing the kids get excited,” she said. “I think when they see the backpacks, they light up, the parents get excited, you know, that's taking stress off of them and it gets them excited to start school.”

Comanche Nation Little Ponies Princess Arlene Schonchin also helped pass out supplies.

To expand its reach, the department will also attend outreach events in Anadarko, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Albuquerque.

The Comanche Nation Office of Environmental Programs, Comanche Nation Indian Child Welfare, and Indian Health Services were among the vendors at the event.
