POLICY:
The purpose of the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program is to provide information on programs beneficial to grandparents who are raising grandchildren, assist grandparents seeking information on resources, make referrals, and aid grandparents in completing applications for services. In addition, monetary stipend and/or emergency assistance to assist the needs of the grandparent who is legally responsible for the care and well-being of their grandchild(ren). If grandchild(ren) is legally adopted, they are not eligible for this program, since they assume the role of “Parent”.
PROCEDURES:
- Eligible applicants must be an enrolled Comanche grandparent or a grandparent of an enrolled Comanche child.
- Participants must present tribal affiliation documentation along with legal documentation; such as Legal Guardianship from Tribal or State Court.
- The grandchild(ren)’s parent cannot reside in the home. A home visit may be conducted at random to verify household composition.
- Financial assistance is available two (2) times per year, in the amounts of $400 for one to two children in the grandparent’s home; $500 for three to four children and $600 for five to six grandchildren, based on funds available.
- Emergency assistance in the form of utility assistance (direct vendor payment) will be on an “as need” basis, based on funds available. Grandparents are eligible to apply up to twice a fiscal year.
- Financial assistance will be payment directly to grandparent in the form of a check which will be mailed to grandparent, or picked up at Social Services.
- Emergency assistance (utility bill) will be paid directly to the vendor.
- Payments made directly to the Grandparent will require that the grandparent(s) provide to Social Services receipts within thirty days of receipt of check. Failure to return receipts will result in closure of case and Grandparent will not be eligible until the following fiscal year.
- The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program will work closely with the Grandparent(s) by networking with the Indian Child Welfare Program, Comanche Nation Substance Program, Comanche Nation Re-Integration Program, Comanche Nation Tribal Court and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
