Senior Spotlight: Zayden Roberts

Comanche Tribal Member and senior at Elgin High School, Zayden Roberts, plays backup center for the football team.

He also participates in wrestling and throwing.

“My Uncle George wrestled in college, and so he put all his kids in wrestling,” Roberts said. “And they told my dad and mom, ‘Put me in wrestling.’ And so, I've wrestled since I was four, and I fell in love with the sport. My first year, I won two matches and lost every other match.”

Roberts got his start in football at five years old.

“My dad, when I was five, made me play,” he said.

Roberts’ biggest accomplishment on the field is being named a state champion in the 2024 season.

“Winning is important to me because I'm out here to compete, and I want to go win,” he said.

Roberts has a 3.6 GPA and will miss class after he graduates, including health class.

“We discuss a lot. Instead of doing a lot of work, we discuss a lot,” he said.

As for Roberts’ plans after graduation…

“I plan to wrestle in college, and then go and become a clinical therapist,” he said.

Roberts said he’s been told he gives good advice and enjoys talking to people.

To stay connected to his heritage, he goes to powwows.

“Love being around my Indian family. Love all of them. And, I mean, that's where I grew up. I grew up in Little Bear Loop, Richards Spur,” Roberts said. “This is my people.”

He also plays a ukulele and looks up YouTube videos on how to play.

“My cousin George got a ukulele, and I really got into it,” Roberts said. “I just bought one because it was my birthday, and it comes in today, so I'm going to go home and play that for a little bit.”

He said he enjoys competition and is waiting until after the wrestling season to decide on post-graduation plans.
