PFC Chockpoyah was from the Walters area. He was drafter into the US Army on February 23, 1943 and was an Infantryman. He and his unit landed on Omaha Beach on June 23, 1944. From July 4-27 they fought and decimated the 17th German SS Division. Fierce fighting resulted in the capture of Culot, France, 106 German Prisoners of War and about 1,000 hedgerows. From August 3-18 they were engaged in heavy fighting for the city of St. Malo. It was during an intense battle for St. Servan, a suburb of St. Malo, that PFC Chockpoyah was killed. St. Servan was captured two days later and St. Malo was captured on August 18th. PFC Chockpoyah was buried at the US Military Cemetery near St. James, France before his remains were reburied at Highland Cemetery, Lawton, Oklahoma in August 1949. He will forever be 20 years old (DOB September 17, 1923).
