Sergeant Melvin "Hawkeye" Myers , Comanche

SGT Myers was from the Boone-Apache area. he entered the US Army on April 30, 1942 and was an Infantryman. The 502nd was activated at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, which was adjacent to the infamous Currahee Mountain, in July, 1942. SGT Myers was also based at Fort Benning, Georgia and at an Army air base outside of Alliance, Nebraska before arriving in Northern Ireland in December, 1943. In March, 1944 he and his unit moved to Nottingham, England for intensive training in preparation of the D-Day invasion. In the pre-dawn hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944, during Operation Neptune SGT Myers and his unit parachuted behind enemy lines between the Douve and Merderet Rivers in Normandy, France. SGT Myers was involved in heavy and intense fighting following the D-Day invasion until he was killed during a ferocious battle for the City of Ste. Mere Eglise, France. his family was told "he had rescued a soldier prior to being killed." SGT Myers had two brothers serve during World War II, Vincent, who earned the rank of Major was was a pilot in the European Theater and Alvin. SGT Myers was buried at Ste. Mere Eglise Cemetery Number 1 until his remains were re- buried at Fairview Cemetery, Apache, Oklahoma in June, 1948. SGT Myers will forever be 28 years old (DOB October 24, 1915).
