25th Infantry Division (the Tropic Lightning Division)
Died of Combat Wounds on May 3, 1945
PFC Conwoop was from the Lawton Area and drafted into the US Army on October 26, 1943. He was an Infantryman and participated in some of the bloodiest fighting of the Pacific Campaign. From February 21 to May 13, 1945, his unit began operations in the Caraballo Mountains on Luzon in the Philippines. They fought their way along highway 5 taking three towns against fierce enemy counterattacks. It was during these operations near the town of Kapintalan, that PFC Conwoop was fatally wounded from shell fragments to his chest. His military marker is inscribed: "Your son fought valiantly in a supreme hour of our country's need. His memory will live in the hearts of our Nation - General Marshall." One of his two brothers also fought in World War II, the other during the Korean War. PFC Conwoop was buried at the United States Armed Forces Santa Barbara Number 1 Cemetery in Luzon before his remains were reburied at Deyo Cemetery west of Lawton, Oklahoma in August 1948. He will forever be 23 years old (DOB July 15, 1921). |
