Food Distribution

To strengthen the nutrition safety net through commodity distribution to low income Native American families. To provide friendly, respectful, and cooperative assistance to those who come to the Comanche Nation for services.

About Us

The Food Distribution Program is entering into its 22nd year of operation. The program is administered solely with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Nutrition Services. The program is designed to provide commodities for low income Native American head of households. We currently serve 12,377 participants a year. The service area is Comanche, Cotton, Tillman, and the eastern part of Jackson County. All Native American households, in which one member is enrolled in a federally recognized tribe, are eligible to apply. Native Americans that reside within the city limits of Lawton and Altus are ineligible to participate in the program. Their only alternative is to apply for the Food Stamp Program with the Department of Human Services.

Guidelines

The head of the households may complete an application and be certified as to their household size and income. It is the responsibility of the participant to provide documentation needed to complete their application. Federal regulations and guidelines are followed.

Upon completion of the application, the participant is informed about the penalty of dual participation. The staff members certifying will maintain a list of currently certified households to provide for the food stamp agencies. In addition, the food stamp program will provide us with current list of certified households to our program.

Nutrition education area program provides participants with materials on caring for commodities. Recipes as well as distribution schedules are shared with the participants every month. The sign in times are 8:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m.
