Comanche Nation Fire Program

The Comanche Nation Fire Program has been active since 1996 and is currently located on Maddische Road across the road from the Comanche Nation Complex. To date, the program has established a Type-6 and Type-7 Engine Crew and a Type-II Initial Attack Hand Crew which is sponsor by the Bureau of Indian Affairs of Anadarko, Oklahoma.

We currently patrol the following 12 counties of trust land for fires in Oklahoma: Comanche, Cotton, Tillman, Stephen, Jefferson, Caddo, Kiowa, Grady, Washita, Canadian, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, also nation wide and mutual aide with volunteer fire department if needed.

The Comanche Nation Fire Program has four full-time employees and 32 emergency fire fighters. The program trains firefighters to suppress wild land fires, conduct controlled burns and coordinate fire prevention with tribal activities. We are now located at our new fire station on Maddische Road across the road from the Comanche Nation Complex.

Forecast Fire Danger

The Comanche Nation Fire Program Engine and Type II Hand Crew member duties include:

• Drives the fire engine to wild land fire locations and positions it accordingly.
• Serves on crews performing duties in fire prevention and suppression.
• Cleans, recondition, and stores simple fire tools and equipment.
• Also special tribal event that may occur through the season.
• Lays or directs hose in the use of water.
• Chops, carries, and piles logging slash.
• May be required to work extended hours to under extremely difficult and demanding conditions.
• Searches out and extinguishes burning materials by moving dirt, applying water by hose or backpack pump.
• Performs prescribed burning crew duties in order to reduce fuel hazards and disease while protecting wildlife.
• Patrols fire line to locate and extinguish sparks, flare-ups, and hot spots that may threaten loss of control of the fire.
• Operates an engine used to pump and distribute water necessary to the suppression and extinguishing of wild land fires.
• Assists with fire dispatch through operation of radios, telephones, and other necessary equipment to exchange information for fire weather and other forest suppression activities.

• Moves dirt, chop brush, and falls small trees to build fire line using various hand tools such as axes, shovels, pulaskis, and mcleods to control spreading wild land fire and/or prepare lines prior to controlled burning.
