Diabetes Awareness Program

Our Mission is to develop or enhance diabetes treatment and prevention programs in American Indian and Alaska Native communities

This program encourages the use of the Indian Health Diabetes Best Practices and promotes the development of local programs based on local community needs and priorities

There are two parts of the Diabetes Awareness Program; prevention and control.

Prevention

Exercise classes, walking clubs, water aerobics classes, weight control clubs, children's activities such as day Camps; Fall Break, Spring Break, Christmas Break, and Summer Break are held to provide diabetes education for our Comanche children. Camps and field trips are with the assistance of other Comanche Nation Programs. Community collaborations with the Community Health Representatives Program, Law Enforcement Program, OU Health Sciences EXPORT Center, Davita Healthcare, Oklahoma Kidney Foundation, and the Comanche Nation's Youth Program to prevent diabetes.

Control

Diabetes Education and counseling is done at the participant's home, in office, community centers, Elder Center, health screenings and health fairs. Diet counseling by registered dietitian Sari Catt-Miller. Foot care education and exams are done in office by Dr. Rodney Stapp. Monthly we have a podiatry clinic for Comanche's with diabetes. All participants seen in the podiatry clinic are by appointment only. The Diabetes Awareness program delivers to home bound clients, handicapped and to people without transportation. Diabetes Testing Supplies are mailed to Clients.
