In 1994 the Comanche Nation Tribal Historic Preservation and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Offices were established by a CBC Resolution, which formed the first NAGPRA Policies and Procedures Guide. In 2006, the guide was revised to create a NAGPRA and Historic Preservation Office Board Code. In 2008, the Nation submitted a Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) application to the National Park Service requesting the assumption of the states role on tribal lands in all preservation matters.
The Historic Preservation Office provides oversight and guidance on all preservation matters of the Nation, where federal consultation is required. Established to create a comprehensive list of cultural properties and to identify potential properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the Historic Preservation Office serves the Nation as its cultural liaison.
The NAGPRA Office assists museums, Federal agencies and other entities receiving federal monies with the return of specific cultural items such as; human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony to the Comanche Nation and lineal descendants.
The NAGPRA authorizes appropriations in the form of grants to Native Americans, Tribes and Museums to assist with documentation and repatriation of Native American cultural materials.
